This September our Training Centre in Soham was taken over for a week by PASMA so they could run their Access Tower Specialist (ATS) course, the first time it has been run since 2023, and our Instructor Richard swapped to the other side of the desk to take the course himself and complete the final stage of his PASMA training.

Access Tower Specialist is the highest qualification available from PASMA for tower users, aimed at those who's work will involve building complex towers of a Non-Standard configuration, outside the scope of a standard manual.

With the course not being run that often and only run at the Test & Research Centre, where the course has been designed around the building and its 25m clearance height, delegates from Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Stoke and London travelled to Soham for a week of tower building.

The course actually began a week previous, with the first day being a theory based day run online via Zoom. This gave the delegates a chance to introduce themselves and for Lead Instructor Lee Choat, who was running the course on behalf of PASMA, to take the group through a recap of the information from the modules that they had done to qualify for the ATS course as well as start to introduce new terminology such as Design Drawings and Assembly, Use and Dismantle Plans (AUDPs). All of which concluded with the first of what was to be a daily theory test.

The first day at Soham was designed to ease the delegates into building a complex tower structure, with "only" a Non-Standard Linked Tower (pictured left) planned for the day.

​After a brief theory session, a team leader was selected and a safety meeting held to plan the build, which was to include high clearance and walk through frames at the base, staggered platform levels and a maximum height of 7m.

​Every delegate was expected to lead either a build or dismantle throughout the week, so it was Adam from Tower Hire (Services) Ltd who took charge on the first morning.

RSC Training's Richard commented on how the first day went:
"It was good to meet everyone in person and it really helped that everyone got on well right from the start. It was to prove to be the foundation for a great team dynamic throughout the week.

It also helped that the guys from Tower Hire (Services) Ltd were experienced building these type of structures, as its what they do for a living, which helped balance any inexperience from the rest of us on the course."
Then next two days were dedicated to building and dismantling what was loosely referred to as a "Horseshoe Tower", but officially a Combination Tower Structure. The concept was that a customer had asked for this particular design of tower to be built, then throughout the course of the job some adaptations were required, meaning the team would need to work from several design drawings as the changes were made.
This time it was Richard's turn to lead the build, so again after the theory and safety meeting, the team got to work putting the structure together, which included two Linked Towers built to 6m high, with a Bridge section across the back joining the two together to form a Large Deck working platform level (pictured right).

Richard commented: "The build itself was fairly straightforward, which sounds silly to say when you see the complexity of it, but it is just a case of following the design drawing specifically.

That's where the role of team leader is important, as it's also about managing the team so the build gets done correctly and also safely."

The first adaptation included added a Cantilever section halfway up across the side and another at the top on one of the ends.

The second and final adaptation was to bridge across an obstruction to another tower that was built on Stairs from the top level, thus creating a tower structure that included elements from all of the category modules of Linked, Bridged, Large Deck, Cantilever and Stairs that were the pre-requisites  to qualify for the ATS course itself.

The fourth day saw the team take on the challenge of building a High Level Tower (pictured left), which included a 14m Linked Tower with a 10m Buttress.

The safety meeting was quite important for this build as, due to the height of the structure, the method of passing components up and down was now going to include the use of ropes. A lot more manual effort and a good communication between the team needed.

The structure went up systematically, with the main tower and the buttress being built and linked together level by level at the same rate, as per the AUDP, until the final section of the main tower was completed to 14m.

Everyone in the team was on the tower or buttress at some point during either the building or dismantling process, with everyone getting a turn roping equipment up or down.

With the majority of the hard work now completed for the week, all that remained was the final day, which was to include Tying In methods.

After a slightly longer theory session, the team quickly assembled three relatively small towers and positioned them ready to tie into various sections of the building.
Three Tying In types were covered on the course, a Box Tie, a Through Tie and a Hook Anchor (pictured below). Working in pairs, each pair then took turns tying in each tower to the building to secure the tower, then undoing and removing the ties.

And so an equally tough and enjoyable week came to an end, with the delegates heading back to their homes having taken on and completed PASMA's most challenging training course and hopefully achieved what they set out to at the start.

Wrapping up the week, Instructor Lee reflected: "I thought the week went really well, there was a nice mix of experience within the group and everyone worked really well together. It was also nice to see the less experienced delegates learning from the more experienced on the various builds"

John Darby, General Manager for the Test & Research Centre, added: "It was a pleasure to host the Access Tower Specialist course again here at Soham. We have been the home of PASMA's flagship course since 2020, and each course sees delegates go away with new knowledge about towers that they can implement in their day to day work, thus helping them stay safe when Working At Height."

Richard also added: "I have really enjoyed the course and would thoroughly recommend other Instructors do the course too. It has done for me what I set out to do, which was to improve my knowledge of towers and the wider industry, hopefully helping me to be a better Instructor ongoing.

Each of us on the course had our own reasons for being there, mine as stated, the guys from Tower Hire (Services) Ltd covering themselves to build these structures in their jobs and Clive and Sean looking to add this type of building to their business model.

You will be hearing more from Clive on his PASMA journey at the PASMA AMM on the 8th October, but on a personal note, as both Clive and Sean had completed all of their courses with us and mostly also with me, it was a nice full circle moment to complete the ATS course with them too and finish their PASMA training with them."

Those if you out there with fantastic memories may recall we like to visit Vertikal Days annually, this year is no exception we will be attending on both days as this is such a great event in the diary!

There are so many exhibitors year its jam packed you can see the full list here, go round have a chat and grab a freebie or two!

The doors open at 10am on 9th and 10th September at the Newark Showground, two days of  networking and the chance to see the latest products and new technology from Manufacturers.

Emergency First Aid at Work
The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is a one day HSE compliant course designed to equip individuals with the basic skills needed to respond to medical emergencies in a low-risk workplace environmrent. 

Course Overview
  • Duration: Typically 1 day (6 to 7 hours of face-to-face or blended training).
  • Validity: The qualification is valid for 3 years, after which a requalification course is required.
  • Suitability: Ideal for nominated first aiders in low-risk settings like offices, retail shops, and hospitality venues

Who Should Attend
The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is designed for individuals who need to act as designated first aiders in specific workplace environments. 
Ideal Attendees
  • Designated First Aiders: Staff members officially chosen to take charge during a workplace medical emergency.
  • Low-Risk Workplace Staff: Employees working in offices, shops, libraries, call centres, or hospitality venues.
  • Small Business Owners: Managers or teams in small companies where a full three-day course is not legally required.
  • Back-Up First Aiders: Staff supporting a primary first aider in larger, more complex organizations.

Digitisation Is Coming...
Last month, our Director Richard was up in Glasgow at PASMA's Head Office for a Training Committee meeting, with the main topic of discussion being the move towards digitisation of PASMA Training Courses.

The meeting was a first official showing of how the course is intended to be run using tablets instead of paperwork for both the Instructor and the delegates.
Data entry, photographs, theory tests and feedback/evaluations are all moving from paper to tablet.

If the thought of doing your training course entirely on a tablet seems scary, don't worry, the move towards this is still a work in progress and is not expected to be fully implemented until the start of next year.

There will however be trials of the new digital systems coming in the next few months, for which RSC Training will be participating in, so it is possible you might get to see and use the new tablets before it becomes the new way of PASMA training.

City & Guilds Confined Space Medium Risk
Last month we successfully run our first City & Guilds Confined Space Medium Risk Course, the delegates enjoyed the course and the feedback was good! This is aimed at persons who are required to enter confined spaces and hazardous areas, providing them with an in depth knowledge of the legal requirements, legislation, safe systems of work and risk assessments.

This course is aimed specifically at entrants and includes competent use of appropriate confined space equipment, including Escape Breathing Apparatus (EBA) and practical exercises covering access, egress and safe working practices for confined space and hazardous areas.

On successful completion delegates will receive a Nationally Recognised certificate (valid 3 years).

We can also run shorter low risk one day courses please ask us for your specific requirements.

We have another course scheduled this month, if you are interested in any level Confined Space Course please do get in touch.

MEWP Spotter Course Now on Our WebsiteIPAF's (International Powered Access Federation) MEWP Spotter is a half day eLearning training course aimed at those who assist a MEWP Operator in safely manoeuvring a machine into position.
On successful completion delegates will receive a Internationally Recognised certificate (valid 5 years). Those who hold a valid Powered Access Licence (PAL) for operating equipment can have the MEWP Spotter (MM) category added to their PAL card.

Who Should Attend

This course is aimed at those who assist a MEWP Operator in safely manoeuvring a machine into position. It is also recommended that Operators, Managers and Supervisors undertake the course to ensure everyone onsite understands the Spotter's role, hand signals and where the Spotter should be safely positioned.

IPAF introduces MEWP Spotter Course!
Those of you with eagle eyes may have seen us announcing that IPAF have released a brand new course, the MEWP Spotter course.

So what is it? Its an online course appx 2 1/2hrs designed for anyone who may need to assist a MEWP Operator to safely manoeuvre a MEWP into position.

The online training course covers methods of communication between a MEWP Spotter and a MEWP Operator, including industry-established hand signals, which can be essential to safe operations in situations where the Operator has restricted visibility.

Assigning someone the role of Spotter provides additional safety in MEWP operations, enabling the Operator to be made aware of any hazards they may not be able to see in their line of sight.

Advanced PASMA Training in action at Soham! 
This last week we have been up at our Soham Training Centre doing a full week of PASMA activities, with a variety of different courses being run and some filming going on.

The week started with a Combined course, being run by Instructor Philip Reddy, covering standard towers and low level equipment. Then for the rest of the week our Instructor Richard Chapman took over to run some additional module courses.

Tuesday it was Towers On Stairways, using the new UTS Sales & Repair stair tower (pictured), followed by Towers With Cantilevers and Towers With Bridges courses on Wednesday and Thursday using the Alto Access HD towers (pictured). It's nice to see some different towers being built on training courses.

Thursday also saw the arrival of the team from PASMA who, along with the film crew, were there for two days to shoot some footage for their upcoming videos. More details on these videos will be released by PASMA in due course.

A good few days had, with some hard work and learning along the way. Thanks also to John Darby from the Test & Research Centre for making the equipment and facilities available for us all.

Our Instructor Richard Elected onto Ladder Committee!
Those of you who have been on a course with us will had no doubt had the pleasure of Richards company for a few hours.

Richard is a very experienced instructor with IPAF, PASMA, Ladder Association and AITT (Forklift Trucks).

As a company we are passionate about people being safe when they are working at height and any way we can have any input into shaping the future of the industry we welcome with open arms.
So we are very proud that Richard has been elected onto the Ladder Association Training Committee and we wish him well in this new role. Don't worry though you will still see just as much of him around our Training Centre's.

Do you require training at your premises? You may not know but we have a network of Instructors across the UK able to come to you at your site.

We can let you know what machines you will need for your training and, provided you have space for the practical and a room for the theory, we can run the course for you at your site.

Typical courses run onsite are 3a / 3b and PAV.

Let us know your requirements and we can get some available dates over to you.

Exciting news just in from our Soham Training Centre as we welcome the arrival of two brand new machines, which will be permanently sited here.

Keeping in line with the machines we have at Thamesmead, we decided to go for Genie machines for Soham as well, with us recently taking delivery of a GR26J Boom and a GS1932 Scissor.

This marks a significant step forward in our plans at Soham and will greatly increase our capacity to run IPAF training courses from this venue, specifically 3a & 3b Operator courses.

RSC Training Director and Instructor Richard Chapman said of the development:

"It's been a long time coming to get to this point at Soham, as we had to wait for the right machines to become available, but now we have them we can really start to push IPAF training at this venue.

Previously, with having to hire machines, IPAF training took a lot more planning in advance and was a bit restrictive for us and our customers. Having our own machines here all the time will mean we can offer more courses here, at times that work better for both us and our customers."
