Working Well With Towers

PASMA Tower Safety Week
may be over for another year, but working well with towers should be a continuing practice. As an Official Partner of Tower Week, RSC Training Ltd were provided with four infographics which we shared on our social media platforms throughout the week to promote working well with towers.

We want people to continue working well with towers, so we want YOU to visit the Infographics Page on the Tower Week website and use these graphics to help share this knowledge with all tower users to help keep them safe.

High Tower Challenge

Although RSC Training Ltd was not specifically involved in it, the Hire/Assembly and Hire/Dealer Partners for Tower Safety Week again took part in the High Tower Challenge, measuring the combined height of towers built by them or by others using their equipment.

This year, members managed to amass a total height for the week of 2891m, surpassing last years total by 1022m! PASMA also committed to donate a pound per metre, so raising £2891.00 for their chosen charity, MacMillan Cancer Support.
Great Work!

Tower Selfie GO!

There was 3 awards up for grabs during Tower Safety Week for 3 challenges in the Tower Selfie GO! section. The first was the Tower Master award, and this went to RSC Training Ltd's very own Director and Instructor Richard Chapman! A separate post can be found here for more details.

The other two awards were the Most Popular award, for the most likes and retweets, and Staff Choice For Humour award, for the one that made the PASMA office chuckle the most. These were the winners:

Richard becomes a Tower Master!

RSC Training Ltd Director and Instructor Richard Chapman has won PASMA Tower Week's Tower Master title for 2016!

This challenge was one of three within the Tower Selfie GO! section, which included getting photos taken with the big foam hand with as many different types, configurations and brands of tower as possible. Richard blew away the competition by getting his selfie with 6 different examples of towers, including a 3T & AGR Standard Towers, a Tower On Stairs, a High Clearance Unit, a Low Level Podium Step Unit and a Low Level Folding Tower Unit.
"Winning this challenge was a bit of a surprise, considering I don't generally take selfies or much like my photo being taken! But as we were an Official Partner for PASMA Tower Week, we ordered a big foam hand and I kept it with me wherever I went that week.

The 6 selfies I took I actually did all in the first two days. On the Monday I was running a normal Towers For Users course so I asked the delegates if they didn't mind posing during the practical.....well towers are always built well on training courses after all!

The other four I did on the Tuesday during an Instructor event at Euro Towers. Roger and his team had all of those different types set up for the event, so all I needed to do was pose with them! I guess you could say I was lucky, but seeing as Euro Towers also won one of the selfie challenges for a photo taken on that day (which I'm also in!), maybe it was meant to be!"
As a result of winning this challenge, PASMA will be sending Richard and 5 colleagues at RSC Training Ltd a Dominos pizza lunch on them!

New British Standard for Low Level Access

22/11/2016

PASMA have announced that as of 31st October 2016, the new expected British Standard BS8620:2016 for Low Level Access has been published to effectively replace the Publicly Available Specification PAS250:2012, which has been withdrawn.

PASMA PAS250 Low Level Access Poster
Following the implementation of the Work At Height Regulations 2005, the use of Low Level Access, specifically Podiums and Pulpits, became much more common for people to find a solution to doing jobs at low level.

Designs for this type of low level work platform (LLWP) have been previously developed in the absence of a formal standard. Whilst the majority of LLWPs provide a safe solution to low level access, the are aspects of some products that could be improved by adherence to relevant and specific design criteria.

Therefore PASMA, along with a group of other representative bodies, had sponsored the development of this PAS to provide minimum safety and performance criteria for these products.

Facilitated by BSI Standards Limited and published under licence from the British Standards Institution (BSI), PAS250:2012 was published for all products that conform to being "a low level work platform with one working platform with side protection for use by one person with a maximum working platform height of less than 2.5m".

Extracted from PASMA website.

Although PAS250:2012 was a fast-tracked standard designed to meet the needs of the client organisations, it was always only going to be a temporary measure before a full British Standard was implemented. The transition to BS860:2016 is not a major one, including a dimensional change to the side protection and a change to two tests.

Therefore, if your current equipment conforms to PAS250:2012 there is no need to change your product immediately. The transition period is expected to continue until April 2017, where it will be expected that equipment will ultimately be replaced by BS8620:2016 type approved products.

In 2017, PASMA will be focusing on Low Level Access and the transition from PAS205:2012 to BS8620:2016, which will result in an update to the training courses that PASMA specifically provide for Low Level Access.

As a PASMA approved Training Centre, RSC Training will stay in touch with these changes so that we can provide the right level of training for our customers.

RSC Training Ltd are proud to announce we will be supporting PASMA as an Official Partner for their Tower Safety Week from 14-18 November 2016.

Tower Safety Week was first established by PASMA to help contribute towards the reduction of falls from height by promoting towers. Falls from height remains one of the biggest causes of fatalities in the workplace worldwide, with a large number of employers choosing to select towers to do their work at height.

Tower Safety Week is about highlighting towers, promoting safe practices and encouraging people to show their well built towers. As such, RSC Training are encouraging our customers and followers to email us with pictures of well built towers in working situations, including their "tower selfies", which we will display during Tower Safety Week to show your company promoting safe practices.
